your gown - The Process
Having a bespoke or custom bridal gown made is a very special, time intensive and exciting process. A bespoke gown is made from beginning to end with the individual bride in mind. This means that the fit is tailored from the start to fit you perfectly! Designs are informed by your taste, figure and dreams of perfect dresses. All the little details are carefully considered and exquisitely hand finished to perfection; our bridal gowns take hundreds of hours to complete. In this way bespoke is the antithesis of the mass production we have all become so familiar with; bespoke is all about the unique construction of each and every gown we are tasked with creating. It is a slow and beautiful process informed by the long and intricate history of fashion and built on the knowledge and secret techniques of those who have created it throughout the centuries.
At Sadie Bosworth Atelier, every creation is a celebration of our love of fabrics, our passion for creating beautiful garments, and the magic of seeing sketches and ideas come to life on our clients for their wedding day. On closer inspection a bespoke gown reveals its secrets; beautiful embroideries and beaded motifs, hidden details, artisinal finishing and couture sewing techniques. Our gowns at Sadie Bosworth Atelier are known for their delicate and sensual aesthetic and are characterised by their distinctive style, ethereal quality and attention-to-detail.
Our studio is situated in the creative hub of Station Drive off Umgeni Road in Durban. This plant filled oasis is our workroom and consultation room. Our fittings are conducted from here and our brides are able to see the construction of their gowns by our skilled team from beginning to end; a little peek behind the scenes. One of the most special parts of this journey is the relationship that we at the studio form with our brides and the excitement as she witnesses the creation and construction of her gown.
To begin the creative process we ask that you fill out the contact form below so that we can set up our initial consultation. Here we discuss your ideas, get to know you a bit better and understand what you are hoping for in a wedding gown. This is a collaborative process; we interpret your ideas, personality and style and use our design skills and experience to bring your dreams to life.
Once we have a better idea of the gown, rough sketches are made and an initial quote is sent out. At this point we provide estimate costs for fabric and time and can advise you on the best option according to your budget. When the design is confirmed we request that a deposit of 50% of the full amount be paid before we commence any work on the garment. This deposit is non-refundable and confirms the use of our services and allocates a spot in our calendar to you and the process of completing your dress.
Each of our gowns take many many hours to construct, fit, finish and embellish and are created from beginning to end at our Durban studio. This process takes at least 6 months to complete, and many of our clients start this process with us a year in advance. Gowns for events within 4 months will incur a rush fee.
We require local brides to come for approximately 5 fittings throughout the process, while our gowns for international and out of town brides usually involve 2 to 3 fittings. This being said our studio has produced gowns for clients with no fittings at all! Our fitting process begins with measurements, which are taken at every meeting, after which a mock up of the gown is created for you to ensure a perfect fit. In the proceeding fittings our brides witness the evolution of their gown from start to finish.
